Using a Habit Tracker for Self Improvement
When it comes to self improvement and personal development, one of the most simple things that you can do is to start a new, positive habit. A habit is a singular item that you can add to your day on a regular basis. Ideally an item that will bring you more joy, more money, better health, or bring you towards a bigger personal goal in some other way. The trick to making an action a habit is repitition. That’s where a habit tracker comes in handy.
Tracking your habits in black and white (I prefer paper, but you can do it on the computer as well) is key to creating habits that last. The act of keeping a record of your daily accomplishments will motivate you to keep going and show you how far you’ve come.
What Should I Track on My Habit Tracker?
Well, it’s totally up to you what habits you’d like to create, however there are a few things to keep in mind.
The habits you track should be daily ones, not things you want to do weekly or quarterly. Those would be too hard to track and will take a long time to show any progress.
Track habits that you are motivated to start. For example, don’t try to build a habit of walking to work every day if you don’t really like walking or if your work is too far away for that to be practical every day.
Lastly, track habits that are achieveable. Aiming big is sometimes a good thing, but if you start with a goal that’s not easily obtainable, you’re less likely to keep up with it.

20 Things To Track in Your Habit Tracker
Here are some ideas to get you started. I suggest you start with between 1 and 5 habits, and add new ones once those have become solidified into your life.
- Drink 8 glasses of water
- Wake up at 6am
- Go to bed before 11pm
- Take a multivitamin
- Meditate for 10 minutes
- Read one chapter of a book
- Write for 30 minutes
- Play outside with your kids
- Cook dinner (rather than ordering in)
- Eat 3 servings of veggies
- Walk or run one mile
- Morning yoga practice
- Nightly journaling
- 30 minutes of personal development podcasts
- 25 squats
- Clean your kitchen
- Do a load of laundry
- Floss your teeth
- Meet someone new
- Call your mother
