Why is personal development the path to a good life? In this article, we will explore why this is true. Personal development can change your outlook and give you the ability to see things from a broader perspective, relieve stress, and allow for a more peaceful life. In addition, it helps you gain an understanding of yourself and what you want out of life.

Personal Development Is The Path To A Good Life Because:

  • It reduces stress
  • Opens your mind
  • Narrows your focus
  • Brings energy to you
  • Broadens your horizon
  • Gives you new skills
  • Increases your effectiveness
  • Allows you to handle change
  • Increases your value
  • Makes you happy

Lets Review Each Of These In Detail.

Reduced Stress

Stress can kill and why it is so essential to reduce or even eliminate it from our lives. Have you ever just fallen asleep in a chair for 10 minutes and woke up just feeling happy and so relaxed. Personal development is like that, only while awake. If you can carve out 10 minutes to sit in a quiet place and close your eyes and then imagine a blackboard with writing on it and erasing until it is black. Then focus on everything being dark; avoid anything coming into your mind keeping it blank. If you do this for 10 minutes, you will be very relaxed and stress-free.

Opens Your Mind

Learning new things opens your mind to new possibilities. New possibilities can lead to new opportunities. Whether you are reading self-help books, listening to the audio, or taking a new course, all of these can provide you with unique insights and outlooks. For example, maybe you take a class on public speaking. Improving a skill like public speaking can be valuable to you, leading to higher-paying jobs and perhaps even new careers. Public speaking is just one example but gaining new knowledge makes you a complete person.

Narrows Your Focus

If you don’t pursue personal development, you tend to drift through life. Sometimes you are fortunate enough to have an employer that pushes personal development on you, and it helps. Some companies like to develop their employees to be able to promote them into handling more significant responsibilities. They do this development because it is better to promote from within, but sadly most companies don’t. Personal development is not just for entrepreneurs but for anyone that wants to become a more knowledgeable, well-rounded person.

Brings Energy To You

When you start personal development, you feel energetic. I don’t know if it is from the increased confidence, the knowledge, or the stress reduction or all of them, but the more you do it, the more refreshed and energized you will feel. You should develop a routine and stick with it. Here is the daily routine I recommend:

I know it sounds hoky, but it works.

Broadens Your Horizon

Continued learning will broaden your horizon as you learn to view things with a more open mind. You become less judgemental and are opening yourself up to positive changes to happen in your life. New skills get you ready for those changes so you can take advantage of them when they happen. If you have not seen the Jim Carrey movie, Yes Man, you should do so. It is a hilarious comedy about a man that decides to say “yes†to everything instead of saying “no†all the time. In the movie, he broadens his horizon with continued learning and transforms his life.

Gives You New Skills

Additional skills can help you have new life experiences. It doesn’t always have to be in terms of what financial gains are in it for you. Maybe you learn to cook, and it’s not to become a professional chef but eat better and enjoy your meals. Learn to create a new website or become a writer. New skills add to your enjoyment. By watching cooking videos on YouTube, I have learned to cook several new dishes and techniques that I have put to use. I now order less takeout, am saving money, and enjoying meals much more.

Increases Your Effectiveness

Of all the ways personal development helps you, increasing your effectiveness is maybe the most important. You can bet this is the case in the workplace and is what an employer cares about the most. But also, as an entrepreneur, personal development increased effectiveness pays off. It allows you to see the bigger picture and helps you navigate any troubled waters ahead. Skills and knowledge are vital to success, whether in a job or a business. The more you have, the better off you will be.

Allows You To Handle Change

Fear of the unknown is the biggest reason people resist change. Personal development allows you to adapt to change because you can better handle stress; you will have confidence in your ability to handle any situation because you have developed the skills to do so. It doesn’t mean you will like the change, but you will be well equipped to handle it. You have learned that change has the possibility of being excellent and opening doors to new opportunities.

Increases Your Value

Let’s face it; most people start pursuing personal development as a means to financial opportunity. The good news is personal development does just that. It helps you become more valuable to employers by adding additional skills and better attitudes. Your business becomes better for the same reasons. There is nothing wrong with the desire for financial gains, and personal development is the key to unlocking your potential.

Makes You Happy

Some will do personal development just because they enjoy it. Learning new skills, improving knowledge, learning to relax, and take time for themselves. These are some of the best reasons for personal development because it means you will stick with it because you enjoy it. For example, I have been writing down things I am thankful for every day for years. It makes me happy to take a minute and think about those things from the day before. I feel my mood instantly improve, and it sticks with me. Positivity feels good.

Conclusion

While it is difficult to convince someone that personal development is the path to a good life, I ask you to try it. It doesn’t take much time to do, and you can do it anywhere. My routine takes less than 30 minutes, and I consider it a vital part of my day. So get started today and try it for 21 days. I am sure you will love it as I do. I mentioned the three books earlier, and there are many more. All you have to do is a Google search for personal development books.
